Wearing only black boxers, Cam descended the stairs. He rubbed the top of Ajay’s head as he passed by the crimson couch. “Still not sleeping good?”

Ajay glanced over his shoulder at his brother. “Not really. What time is it?”

“Six.” Cam dropped into Gramps’ recliner. “You look like hell.”

“I need to talk but it can’t get back to Nate or Emily’s father.”

Cam slowly leaned forward, his forearms balanced on his thighs. “You fuck her?”

“You said to stay away from her and I have. But I was at Critters last night. Emily was there too with Jake. Some guy tried to take her from the restroom. I chased them down and ran him off the road.”

“Holy shit.”

“Yeah. Well, she’s fine. I drove her home. Everything’s fine.”

“Why is this a secret from Nate and her father?”
